At the opening of Katerynoslavsk Mining College Professor Kurilov V.V. created a laboratory of General Chemistry for the education of mining engineers in Chemical disciplines. Originally, it was located in the house of the former Potemkin Palace, and then from 1907, it was moved to building No. 2 (Chemical). Laboratories of qualitative, quantitative and mining analysis were organized there. The Laboratory of Physical Chemistry was founded in 1913-1914 by Lev Volodymyrovich Pisarzhevskii (who was a Head of the laboratory of General Chemistry, Qualitative Analysis and Physical Chemistry), and Yu. V. Korshun, (who was a Head of the laboratories of Qualitative and Rock Analysis. Then, he headed the Department of Organic and Analytical Chemistry).
